I think it's been fixed several times since the cross bar is missing - the crucifixion will happen. At least he has the foot rest.
I'm with LD, a little disturbing. But somehow it adds to the human touch this way. Maybe . . . the human broke it, and the human is trying to repair it, keep it vertical, functional?
