Sunset (Chinatown)

Haunting. It could be anywhere. A table and a chair against a shadowed wall.

It has a sculptural feel, as if set up by design, and not for use.

Like a painting. Lovely.

It does have a painted texture to it. Wistful.

I like how your LA is mostly empty, a real ghost town where the only human beings are homeless.

When I'm struggling with writer's block, THIS is the sort of image I get in my head.

It's amazing. I don't know why, because really, it's sad, and it's ugly. And yet so beautiful. As I wrote on my blog quite a while ago, there's is something strangely appealing in the ugly as far as photography goes. Sean Hemmerle for example, has photographed a series New York Times called "the remains of Detroit" that are striking. They don't attempt to make the subject anything it isn't. It's straight forward shots of the ruins of Detroit. And what's almost scary, is how much more interesting those images are than the same places would have been when intact.

Very Wyeth-esque. Marvellous tones and textures.

PS - my best camera is a 4-year-old Canon Powershot SX100 - the world's best point & shoot. I splurged last February on a Canon 50D. In btw, I wasted my some $ on a Canon Rebel. I'm trying to use the DSLR more these days.

Very painterly; the composition, the tonality, it has it all.
