In the way of offering an unsolicited plug on behalf of someone I've never met, I'm reading and enjoying "A Listening Thing" by William Michaelian.

To my mind, the narrator, Stephen Monroe, is half Bartelby, half Occupy Wall Street.

(By the way, although I had no idea until googling it, the full title of Melville's short story is "Bartelby The Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street.")

Written by long-time LA Times and LA Weekly journalist and now a professor at Loyola Marymount, Lynell George, you can find it, I'm told, at bookstores all over town.
